Made by Hand. Fired in a Kiln. Born in Central Texas.
Out here, our nearest neighbors are cows and the occasional armadillo — and we wouldn't have it any other way. Mellyn's is a one-woman studio nestled in the heart of Central Texas, where every piece of fused glass jewelry and décor is designed, cut, layered, and kiln-fired by hand.
The Maker Behind the Glass
I'm Lori, the artist and owner of Mellyn's. What started as a curiosity about color and light has grown into a full creative practice centered on dichroic fused glass — one of the most luminous, unpredictable, and rewarding materials I've ever worked with. No two pieces come out of the kiln the same way. That's not a limitation; it's the whole point.
What Is Dichroic Fused Glass?
Dichroic glass is coated with ultra-thin layers of metallic oxides — the same technology originally developed for aerospace optics. When light hits it, the glass shifts color depending on the angle, the light source, and the layers beneath. It can look gold in one moment and teal the next. Deep violet in shade, electric green in sun.
Fusing takes that glass and transforms it further. I cut, stack, and arrange pieces by hand, then load them into a kiln that reaches over 1400°F. The glass melts, flows, and fuses into a single unified piece — and what comes out is never exactly what went in. Every firing is a collaboration between intention and the kiln's own logic.
What Makes Each Piece One of a Kind
- No mass production. Every piece is cut and composed by hand before firing.
- Dichroic glass is inherently variable. Color shifts with light, angle, and layering — so your piece will look different in morning light than it does at dusk.
- Kiln results are unrepeatable. Even with identical materials and settings, the glass moves in its own way. What you receive is genuinely singular.
- Small-batch studio work. I don't outsource. Every piece that ships from Mellyn's has been touched, considered, and finished by me.
